World Youth Day Madrid 2011
Pope Benedict XVI has invited the youth of the world to join him in Madrid, Spain for the XXVI World Youth Day in August of 2011. The theme for these days will be, “Rooted and Built Up in Jesus Christ, Firm in the Faith” (cf Col 2:7)
Please be aware that the definition of “youth” in most countries of the world applies to older teens and young adults into their 30’s. In light of this and the high degree of care which would be required to protect younger pilgrims overseas, Bishop Farrell has decided that no one younger than 18 may participate in World Youth Day 2011 in Madrid as a pilgrim from our diocesan parishes or schools. Furthermore, in order that we can monitor compliance with The Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, and to assist in coordinating with Dallas groups at the event itself, it is requested that any groups or individuals participating from our diocese submit travel plans and itineraries to the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministries.
Although we did not receive enough registrations to put together a diocesan contingent from the Office of Youth & Young Adult Ministries, our office still stands ready to assist pilgrims from Dallas traveling with other groups or on their own to WYD 2011 in Madrid:
- We will provide helpful suggestions and links on our website regarding making individual pilgrimages to WYD Madrid.
- We invite all pilgrims from the Diocese of Dallas to file their itinerary with us. With permission we will make itinerary and contact information available to other Dallas pilgrims who will be in Madrid. Please send to kdougherty@cathdal.org.
- We will continue to monitor any planning tips and/or alerts which may be issued by the U.S. Catholic Bishops and make these available to Dallas pilgrims.
- If numbers allow, we will be available to help gather pilgrims prior to WYD for prayer, community building and/or a send-off blessing.
Prospective pilgrims are asked to email their name, contact information and itineraries to kdougher@cathdal.org. You may also call Kevin directly at 214-379-2846.
